PTH chips

I have fried at least 6 PTH chips trying to power my N64.
I always wire them up correctly, and there are always sparks between the capacitor and one of the resistors on the PTH chip.
One in a while it explodes and destroys the wiring.
What am I doing wrong? Is there another regulator I can use?

Take pictures of your wiring. Which PTH chips are you using?

If the cap is exploding, its probably wired backwards. Check to make sure you know which leg of the cap is + and which is - because its not always clear.

I know the cap is wired right, but does it matter how short the pins are?
Does it matter which side of the chip you wire to?
I used PTh08080WAZ and WAS

If there is a spark and the cap blows it is wired backwards. Period.

Either the cap is wired backwards or the entire Pth is wired backwards.

One way or another you have positive going into the cap where the negative should be.

IDE cable is there on a fried chip just to show how I wire it.

Why does it look like the bottom - gray wire is touching the 3.3v gray wire AND the negative side of the capacitor?
That's what I was thinking!

Dang, I'm stumped. Maybe you just got defective regulators? I've got defective amps from TI. Both chips only had one working channel.
