Possibly smallest PS2?

Hey, the playstation line has always been my favourite. So I was thinking of doing a ps1 portable, got the screen, a psone, some controllers etc. Then I thought, Hey, there's the ps2 slim, why not that? And I started digging. How about a PS2 slim v12 or v13 (SCPH-700XX) with a hardwired IDE2SD and hdloader on the root of the mc. What do you guys think? That would be ultra thin, no disc drive, only the heatsinks, controllers, screen and battery.

I've discussed this idea a few times over the years in the chat, except my plan had it using CF cards instead of SD because CF is compatible with IDE, you'd just have to hardwire a CF slot on. It would totally work as far as I know, but I've never tested it. I'm also not 100% sure if the PS2 boots without the DVD drive, but I'm sure we can find a workaround using a modchip or FMCB or something. Could get even smaller if we can get someone to do what Tchay did to the GC and find out what the inner layers are like so we can trim it.

It does not.

And I have wanted to make a PS2 portable since my beginnings as a modder. Why haven't I yet?

- PS2 mobos are expensive
- PS2 mobos are big...so far
- PS2 uses an awkward voltage
- I know nothing about the PS2

Granted I knew nothing about the gamecube when I first started. So its not an impossibility. I would really like to dive in...

Maybe we can get lucky and find a cheap lot of broken ones on ebay or something. It's like you said, I think with enough research and some luck, we may be able to get the PS2 to GC levels of knowledge.

This is the best I could find. Ends up being 25 bucks per system. And I'm pretty sure one of those is totally ruined (from pics).

In comparison, buying in bulk for the gamecube got you 6 bucks per system. Breaking gamecubes was no big deal because of that.

I really don't understand why the price for these won't go down. I hope its not because they had a short lifespan and are considered rare.... :neutral2:

I think they might actually still be produced, or were produced until quite recently.

Used slims at EB Games/Gamestop go for $20. Also, look for the latest model PS2 Slims with the internal PSUs. Most can't run FreeMCBoot or use the Independence exploit at all, but the motherboards are much smaller than others according to Palmer.

That means we'd have to use USB for those instead of IDE though, and even though Open PS2 Loader has made USB loading more compatible, IDE is still a lot better imo. On the other hand, if its really that much smaller, it might be worth compromising compatibility and speed for size.

I might start researching it. But the board is still too big. Our only hope is that most of the components are unnecessary or used for the DVD. Theres SO many chips on the board, that it doesn't look promising. :(

EDIT: ZETURI, GET UR ASS IN THIS THREAD

Ah, I remember when I tried playing with one of those a while ago. I feel tempted to get another slim. And play with it some moar.

In all seriousness, the board is only slightly larger than the gamecube one at stock size, especially if you remove that small section with the usb ports and switch. It's really to set up free mcboot and usb advance type stuff too, so you have an easy solution for SD/USB/HD loading. I'd be amazed if it can get chopped down to what the gamecube has been....

Argh, thinkin' about this again makes me wanna scour my local flea and find another cheap slim ps2. I REALLY SHOULDN'T BE WASTING MY MONEY BECAUSE I NEED TO EAT AND NEED TO PAY FOR BILLS. BUT I DUNNO THIS IS GETTING INTERESTING.

Well theres a little spark growing in me.

But need to finish up my next 3 or 4 portable gamecubes first.

Motherboards usually go for around 25 online.

First off, what is the revision we need to be getting. The one that is the smallest and best for disc free loading. That way anyone reading this thread will know where to start with their experimenting.

Its not that hard to get the board to a 5"x5" square (just from looking at the pictures.

If we can...
- get board down to 4" = sifuf sized portable
- get board down to 3" = PSvita sized portable
- get board less than 3" = psp sized portable

So we definitely need to do IDE. USB has terrible compatibility. Unless its a WIP and they plan to fix MOST of those games in the next 6 months....

So whats the downside to IDE again? It won't work on newer slim models which have a smaller motherboard??? Has that been confirmed???

Issue with USB is mostly the videos. A lot of times the whole game works fine except the videos are choppy. If someone can find scans of both boards it might help to see if its worth it or not.

Not sure what revision. At least this can get us in the planning stages. Taking a closer look, it looks promising. Might be a lotta useless stuff on that board....we shall see.
I have one of that revision. Sadly, it's dead and I've been harvesting parts from it. Mostly the USB ports and the mini 7805s

can i have it? I could use it to scan layers. If you could fit it in a large envelope, then it would only cost like 50 cents at most :p
