PC Audio Help

I got my computer rig together, which includes an asus m4a785td-v evo motherboard(onboard radeon 4400 or so). It has 7.1 analog audio out, which I never tested(sorry about that) I've been using vga out to my monitor. I have catalyst drivers installed, which I installed after I got the thing together. Later, I went to canadacomputers(computer parts store) and bought a sapphire radeon hd 5770 viper-x. I used the dvi to vga converter thing and not the hdmi output. Today, I decided to test the audio(put the computer together yesterday). Nothing came out from the audio out on the motherboard itself, so I can only assume the audio is only working from the hdmi port on the 5770. Is there any way around this, installing some third party audio drivers or something?

edit
I think I just need to change some stuff in the control panel, I think it's set to outputting from the optical output. Never mind, still won't work.

Maybe you just fail.

Uhh...faulty motherboard? Give us more details.
