multiple console control box

so im making a ddr home pad, posting pics later when its complete, but i wanted to make it multi platform.

ive got 2 pads to use as the guts, a ps2 one and an xbox one (that can be turned into usb thanks to redcl0ud)

its a simple layout, just up, down, left, right, start, select, x, and o
a 9 pin serial port thing would cover all the wires needed.

i wanted to wire it all internally, but i remembered something from making my pn64 (internal wiring vs external controller port)

in the n64 controller's case, you could use a simple switch to throw control from one to another as theyre were only 3 wires, data, gnd, and voltage.

how would you wire a control box together that houses both pads if you have to wire each button specifically?

im thinking either splitting the grounds between the 2, but im not sure if you would need diodes on each control.

anyone out there with this kind of experience?
