How many mAh would be a good supply for a portable n64?

4500 mAh will give you between 2 1/2 - 4 hours depending on screen/N64 revision etc.

thanks. Does anyone have any suggestions for Ni-Mh batteries? If I used Ni-mh batteries would I need a specific kind, like 9v or AA?

Just order a couple of li-pos from hailrazer's battery tutorial, they work great.

They would work, but not a lot of capacity. Four or six of those would be decent. Better yet, get a beefy camcorder battery from the same site.

What's even greater: Those will discharge at ~ 1.3 Ah or 0.25C, while they charge at approx. 0.75 - 1 C, meaning they charge up to 4x faster than they discharge (~ 1 hour)
