LSDJ - purpose?

Please pardon my noobness, I have searched and read the lsdj site, but I can't seem to tie things together.

I'm seeing a lot of modded gameboys are being sold with LSDJ included. From what I gether, LSDJ is flashed onto the gameboy rom, so it can be used to get sound from it, right? Through the headphones jack?

Now, for the "average" gamer, who would only play games from a gameboy, an lsdj mod would not be very useful, right?

Or are there other advantages I'm not understanding here?

Thanks so much for the info. I've only JUST gotten into modding gameboys, but haven't gotten any further than some spray painting and moderate fixes here and there. Am now looking to do my first mods but am a bit unclear on what to order.

LSDJ is used to make tracks/music on the GB hardware.

It is not a mod, just a rom.
Chipmusic.org is a good place to look if you ever develop an interest in creating such music.
