Gameboy games memory gone?

Gameboy games, they're great but when i took Zelda out of my gameboy a couple days ago the memory was wiped off completely. Gasp! I was wondering if anyone knows how to prevent this besides never taking a game out once its in. Is there something wrong with my gameboy or is it the game? Thanks

The battery in the cartridge is probably dead, which has nothing to do with it being in the game, it will forget the save regardless, the only way to fix it is to replace the battery.

Powering off or removing the cartridge while it saves can screw it up too. I found that when I was goofing around and kept putting Donkey Kong Land in and out of my GBA, its save got erased.

I was playing it during recess at school, it literally made me sick and I went home.
