I'm using an official nintendo n64 controller and I don't think I want an L or a d-pad in my portable. Can I just cut that section of the controller off? If so how?

You can, just make sure that you don't cut any wanted traces going to the black blob in the middle.

Please DONT cut off the SMD stuff or you'll kill it. Well, unless you relocate it. What he means is to cut the traces (the part that connects the pads for the dpad to the IC. :D.

Since L and the dpad are both wired to the same side of the board, find an area with traces without anything on either side of the board, (except the traces obviously,) and use scissors with sharp blades, and cut it. WHATEVER YOU DO DO NOT CUT ANYWHERE NEAR THE MAIN CHIP. If it's your first portable, and you don't have experience with cutting motherboards, try to cut as far away from the chip as possible.

I threw this together for you. You should be able to cut along the line.
