But this means you need to have 2 cables, the charger and the AC power cable.

What If you connected the charger to the PCB, then just connected the PCB also to the Switch with all the stuff on it?

This question's been asked several times.

Basically you need a smart charger that will provide enough amps to power the entire portable and charge the batteries at once. Most smart charges don't provide enough amps.

You don't need a second cable. You just need to build your power brick and charging brick in to the same enclosure, and then run 3 wires to your portable instead of just two. 8.4v Charge, 12v AC, GND.

I remember having this problem. So I went with batteries that have a huge board inside, but can take a normal power supply. It only comes with a 1 amp one, so I need to find a better one sometime.

Those are called Charge Management Boards.
BatterySpace has had CMBs out of stock for like a year, I just sent them an email this morning about it.

I hate to go off topic, but could someone explain to me a little bit about how that diagram works? The main thing is that I don't fully understand how a DPDT switch works on the inside.
