Why did you sand the ports? You might've sanded off a trace or something. Please post a pic of your board if you can, especially where you sanded.

Those wires are stripped really far back. Be sure they dont touch each other.

try to use electrical tape not ducttape or scotch tape.
maybe t-rex tape will work

you can desolder the pins off on the things of but it takes time and sofar the safest way to remove them (at least for what i know).
