Hey all.

I came across a 3.5mm to A/V cable today while looking on allelectronics.com for some parts. Specifically this one:

As I was also ordering a few more headphone jacks, I got to wondering if anyone knew if it was possible to use the switching headphone jack here:

(or possibly some other jack) could work with that cable, without anything shorting out, allowing for a single port for a portables video out as well as audio out for hooking externally to a TV.

I won't be using this on my current project, but if anyone knows of what I'm getting at here, it may come in very handy for someone else (or me lol) future project.

So after doing a little more research, I've found that the name for these jacks is TRRS (Tip Ring Ring Sleeve) and that there aren't very many places that has them.

I found some here:

I've ordered a few along, with the cables I ordered last night, and will be able to see how it works when they come in. Hopefully this will allow for some space saving inside a case. We shall see.

Good find! Ive been looking for TRRS jacks for a while now. Thanks!

Those are the kind of jacks present in most mobile phones and tablets. The iPad Mini has a pretty large one that isn't too hard to work with, so you could order something like that online.

Now that I think about it, it's kinda insane that no one has use this in a portable it saves quite a bit of space... Thanks 4 da free idea! :awesome:

Made this little diagram up for this. Hope it's useful for someone.

I'm still trying to figure out how to incorporate this with a switching headphone jack...

Thanks for the diagram! I have one of those cables kicking around my house that I have been eyeing for a while now and always wondered how it would work out.

You can also do mono audio if you want to maintain the switching function of the RadioShack jacks.

Is your pinout a standard for 4pole video-audio jacks? I think many manufacturers just implement them any way they want.

Those pin-outs are specifically for the cable from allelectronics.com and jack from vetco.net i linked in the first post.

I am not sure about other manufacturers but I believe you are correct that they made them however they pleased as far as pin outs. So you probably cant use that jack for regular headphones and that a/v cable, you would need two separate.

For my portable I plan on switching the onboard speakers and audio out to the tv with a switch like this:

I'll post a mspaint diagram with my setup later.
