Xbox Slim Worklog

Well I've had this Xbox original sat around for a while and as most of you know, this thing is quite beasty in size. However the xbox has loads of potenial when running XBMC. So with this in mind I have set out to make a Slim Xbox ditching the CD/DVD drive, using a 2.5" hard disk and making an external power pack to save space.

So far I've made a mould of which will be the new box for the motherboard. I will be vac forming the case on proper vac machine tomorrow. Anyway, heres a couple of pics to give you a rough idea on size.

Yup, although I don't remember seeing the xpod completed, but I do remember dkap's xbox handheld, it was a vibrant mountain-dew green and I'm pretty sure it ran off of batteries. dkap isn't around anymore, and all his pics were hosting on his(now down) website. I'll see if I can find some, I think I saved them to my harddrive for something back then.

Oh yeah! I remember that green beast. Probably as heavy as my PGPC. Which is, to say, absurdly heavy.

Ah! Nice work, budnespid.

I've been thinking about doing some Xbox modding of some sort, I've always wanted to try it, just gotta get my hands on an xbox.

I need to finish my xbox project. Its just been... Sitting there, while the gamecube gets all the love.

The problem with portabilizing an XBOX is that it is huge and untrimmable. It's also power-hungry and heavy, but those aren't as problematic. It would be like trying to portabilize a desktop PC. I considered building a laptop, but pricing it out, it's not that cheap and you might as well spend a bit more and build a 360 laptop which will (sadly) get you much more recognition. Yes, the XBOX laptop can do more, but a normal laptop can do even more, is cheaper and more portable, which makes the XBOX laptop rather pointless unless you REALLY want to play an exclusive game. Now that I think about it, same goes for 360 laptop. Something like a G73 is way more practical and cheaper. I don't get why XBOX 360 laptops are so desirable, now that I think about it.

Now I'm depressed again. :cry4: /rant

Hmm well this topic has gone waaaay off track but its good to see that theres some love for the good old xbox.

I think all the points above cover why I haven't bothered to attempt making a portable out of this but rather a slim multimedia centre which you can tuck away in the house or even in a car.

Anyway:

Thanks guys!

Had a small set back and had to make a few changes to the mould so I'm now hoping that it will get done today. I've also made a mould for the external power supply, which will hopefully be vac formed tomorrow. I've just this minute ordered one of these:

This will allow me to use my 2.5" 80Gb SATA laptop drive rather than the standard 3.5" 20Gb IDE drive thats in the xbox from stock.

More updates tonight...hopefully.
