Working on Wii portable, have questions though

Hey ho everyone. I recently got inspired to do my own portable, so I am trying to gather all the information I can before I start spending money on items. I want to take the motherboard and DVD drive of a Wii and put it into a compact Atari 1050 disk drive. You can see and image of it here:

I want to gut out the inside of a 1050, replace the insides with a Wii, place the DVD drive so you can insert the Wii DVD through the 5" 1/4' disk slot, and add a flip open PSOne 5" LED screen to place on the top. I loved playing with my Atari 800XL as a kid, and I think it would be so cool to install a new system in an old box. Its a long journey, I know, but what I want to do with it is have it ready for my visual artistry work that I perform at clubs.

Anyway, I have some questions for people who have been working with the Wii so that I can get a good idea of how this can be useful project for me.

1. Can I install two different video outputs? I would like to have one output be the flip screen and the other be a composite or S-video out. I would like to be able to see the screen from the base, but I also need an output to go into my video board mixer. That way I can mix live game play with other visual effects. Can that be done my adapting this hardware? I have seen Wii laptops with a open LCD screen and a composite jack on the side and they say its for an output to a different screen. And if so, where can I find some documentation on how to make that work?

2. Is is possible to move some of the jacks that are on the motherboard to somewhere else? I don't think thats the right way to ask that question, so let me tell you what I mean. Because the Atari 1050 box is longer than the Wii box, I will need to move some of the ports on the side to where I can move them to the back of the Atari box. Things like Gamecube ports, SD card port, power supply port, etc. I know thats getting into some hardware work, but I have seen portables online that have done amazing thigns when it comes to the original hardware positioning.

3. (optional) Is it possible to put some new hardware onto the Wii motherboard? I would honestly like to have four USB ports to install on the back. And also, I would love to have a mini firewire video output port on the back of the box as well. Is it possible to add these types of things to the motherboard, or is that just too much trouble than its worth?

I would like to use this as a visual tool for my art. I am working with a Gamecube right now thats emulating classic consoles. But the point of this project is to try to reduce the number of boxes that I have some set up and tear down at the end of the night.

I would appreciate any help you guys can give to me, and thank you all in advance. Thanks guys, later.

1. Yeah. Just split the video signals, or use S-video for one and composite for the other (I believe it outputs both on the same mode). This link may be helpful: http://www.gamesx.com/wiki/doku.php?id= ... _av_pinout

2. Easily- just desolder and connect with some wires. It's done all the time.

3. No.

If it's just for emulating classic consoles, why a GameCube or Wii? Why not an XBOX or laptop?

Hey dude, thanks for the helpful reply.

Ok, so do I just connect a S-video wire to the right pin, split that, have one go to the monitor, and the other go to the back of the box? Can I make a S-video Y connection after its been attached to the Wii pin?

Ok, I have a friend who solders, so I'll work with him with that. What type of wires would you recommend I use?

I figured I was asking for the moon here.

Well, I use a laptop for my main software visuals, and I use my Gamecube as my hardware visuals. I can't run a emulator through a "Live Camera," because thats how I display my Gamecube. Unless there is a webcam emulation software that I haven't been able to find, I don't think I can make that work.

And an Xbox? No way man, I don't like the way that controller feels. I want a Wii so I can buy a classic controller so I can get back to basics.

Thanks man, later.

If you're doing this much, I'd advise you just get yourself an xbox and rewire in the controls or whatnot into a nice controller.

"Live Camera", what's that?

Also, you prefer the Classic Controller to the XBOX one? Blech, but to each their own I guess. A lot of people like the Genesis controller, and I hate it.

Well i looked into emulators for the XBox and there didn't seem to be that many available for it. Seems kind of limiting.

I guess I should have clarified. The input is labeled "Microsoft DV Camera or VCR." That is the live video feed that comes from my Gamecube. And thats where my emulated games come from.

You can add extra usb ports to the wii, but you'll need to use a usb hub.

Hummmm, thats an interesting idea. I'll have to think about that.

Thanks guys.

I say let him make it. We need a dang WiiP.....

EDIT:

Palmer.............cough cough
