TW's mau5head!

I finally finished a legit project! I'm so proud I can finally make a thread in this board :3

After much blood, sweat, and tears, and finally getting some good pictures from my sister, I am happy to present my mau5head! Worklog can be found here. I will be wearing this at SNAFUcon this weekend, and if the reception I've gotten so far is any indication, people are gonna love it.

For those of you who missed the worklog, this is made of a 14" acrylic lamppost globe and styrofoam insulation board covered in stretch velvet. The ears contain two Sony speakers, which I can connect to my phone or iPod and play music through. The eyes light up thanks to six blue LEDs, powered by AA batteries, and there is an 80mm fan in the back, which runs off a 9V battery, that helps keep things cool.

Have some pictures!

This is a shot my sister got while I was working on it. I was vaping at the time and the LEDs looked killer.

After SNAFUcon I should have plenty of pictures of it at my disposal, so I plan to post those and maybe make a better video.

Noah: Thanks! I'd never seen anyone put speakers in one of these before. I may or may not be the first to do so! :O

Zero: Yeah, I think so too. I may do that.

Ashen: Thank you! And I figured you, if no one else, would appreciate my music choice XD

robm: Thanks! And yeah, actually, that's the plan. Halloween for sure, and any other gatherings or meetups where it'd be appreciated.

Ah, it's so satisfying to work hard on something and have everyone appreciate it! Not sure I'd make another unless someone paid me for it, though. XP

Yeah, that first picture is sweet, for being such a simple thing, LEDs are hella cool.

I want a see a video of you wearing this doing balisong tricks kicked back in a chair with smoke everywhere.
Then whenever someone questions your badassery, you simply embed the video into their soul.

Looks pretty Dang amazing. Congrats on finishing a project. A bit more than I can say at the moment :P

Also, for the record, LEDs are pretty darn nifty. They weren't so simple when they were first made, but yeh. That said, the ideas behind the LED are pretty simple and had been known for quite a while before the invention. (Also, the first visible spectrum LED was made by a guy from my uni. Awwyeh)

I still like yours, Joey, evil mau5heads are always cool :P

SS, that is a solid idea. I'm gonna put this on my to-do-at-some-point list for sure. XD

Herma: Thank you! And that's pretty awesome.

Thank you as well, nuke!

Oh man, SNAFUcon 2012 starts in like 11 hours. I gotta get some sleep soon so I can go impress Segaes.

I wanna build one where half of it is latix demonic mau5, then the other half is normal.

edit:
something like this. glad I save the pic haha

Oh dude, that would be KILLER. DOITDOITDOITDOIT

Also... bad news, guys. The mau5head's already had an accident. Fell off a table and hit the ground and some of the acrylic cracked. The eye dome is broken and the main globe is cracked. :C It's totally salvageable, though. Once I get home I'm gonna do some repair work on it, and in the meantime I'm passing the broken eye dome off as being themed after the new album cover.

If you are to do a second revision of this, it shouldn't be too complicated to make a circuit that would take the audio line and have the eyes pulsate to the bass of the song, or something similar. Basically it'd be taking a snippet of a light organ circuit and only using one region. Alternatively, you could put a third LED in there somewhere and make a proper light organ.

Well, I was able to successfully repair my mau5head and it held up perfectly for the rest of the con. I don't know how many dozens of people asked for pictures and hugs, but I was definitely one of the most popular people there. Feels good!

Herma, I definitely plan to have sound-controlled LEDs if I either make another or revamp this one. There was actually another guy with a mau5head at SNAFU -- he had a red one -- and it had sound-activated lights. It was badass! I still stole most of the spotlight, though, just because I was there for a much longer period of time :P

Joey, I got my fabric here. That's the one for the head, anyway, the same type in black was used for the ears. About a yard of each type of fabric turned out to give me enough to do both ears and the head.

Also, check it out! This is the first result when you Google image search "deadmau5 SNAFUcon"!
