He's probably planning to use a 7.4v battery. A lot of (older/larger) external drives use a 12v PSU.
TechSteve: These days, most SATA-based external drives can be run straight off USB. For instance, I myself have this enclosure. It [almost always] requires two USB ports because one alone typically doesn't provide enough amperage. Though on some PCs, one is fine (seems to be laptops that don't put out the amps). Not sure what the PS2 puts out. But you could just use two of the ports or connect directly to your battery with a 7805 or something.
You wouldn't even need an enclosure really. You could just get something like this.

Ok i bought this http://cgi.ebay.com/USB-2-0-SATA-ID...&otn=4&po=LVI&ps=63&clkid=1306434229984729318 hopefully it will work i am using a 2.5 inch old 250 gb pata hdd it only needs 0.7 amps so im hoping(crosses fingers) that it will work without an external power supply.

Update! ok got my ide to usb in that mail and......IT WORKS! it works!!!!! yeah! 
i really didnt think that the ps2 would supply enough power but IT DOES! that means that ill have a 250 gb hdd in my ps2p! thatll hold around 50+ games at 4gb a piece so yeah ok i still need to wire up rgb and wire controller it wont have batteries YET because the batteries i want to get are gonna run me 250+ dollers so for now itll run off of wall power ok i got a lot of work done and now pics.

Hey man, great job! Can you post how you got the hard drive connected and working? Thinking of doing this for my PS2P. Also, have you noticed any game lag from loading from the hard drive?

On my ps2, the loading times are much faster on the HDD then the disk. Every game without fail loads fasterAbyssPWNS said:

You can use a mod chip to connect directly via ide BUT i didnt have enough room for this method so i used a usb hddand free mcboot modded my mc, it loads all games VERY fast the only problem is that some of the games will have choppy cutscenes BUT the gameplay is flawless, very good fps ive already sold my ps2p so i cant upload any more pics but basically thats how everything works. also it is the smallest ps2p thats been made thus far and the only (handheld) gaming system to date that i know of with an actual hdd.

Awesome, thanks for the info! I was thinking i'd do the Free MCBoot route too. I don't have a modded PS2 at the moment though, so i'll have to figure out how to get a MCBoot memory card in the meantime. Gotta finish my vacuum form table and then i'll be sure to post a worklog on my PS2P.

ha made that too but no video of it yet as it is not finished also,it has a micro rpg launcer,night vision the two gauntlets fire and lightning,glowing eyes and a hud built into the face half and a voice changer. I call it the varia suit, heres some pics of the helmet -------> well the face half
and by hud i mean heads up display, I can see out of it very well its hooked up to two myvu crystal screens and a beagle board running linux with a webcam as well as ir leds (wich allow me to see very well at night). But as i said im not done with it yet,and yes i know its waaaay overkill but hey that means more possibilities.
