Quadrophonic sound amp?

With many more Gamecube and Wii portables being made, do you think it'd be possible to have surround sound built into the portables, 4 speakers and all? I think it'd be kinda neat if one of the more technical members could do some research on this to see how difficult it would be, and how to do it.

It is possible, but overcomplicated. You would need to decode the digital S/PDIF signal and pipe it to a 4-channel amp, dual stereo amps or four separate mono amps. I'm sure there are chips that can do that, but I'm too lazy to look it up right now. That said, you shouldn't bother. Why? A portable is held in front of you. You can add surround sound speakers, but it will probably sound worse because they will be in front of you anyway.
