Newb Makin' a gcp (worklog plus questions)

Hello, I'm Tankmin. I recently put cfw on my psp and I can now run all kinds of emulators on it. That got me thinking, what else do I have that I can make modifications to? I realized I had a perfectly fine gamecube collecting dust becuase my wii made it obsolete. Why not try to make a portable out of it? For this project I'll mainly be using these threads : http://forums.benheck.com/viewtopic.php ... 98&start=0 for generic stuff and viewtopic.php?f=36&t=2844 for a custom regulator board. I have no soildering skills, but know someone who does, and I have everything else the first guide says I need except casing stuff. No big deal, the case is the least of my worries right now. Since I'm a complete noob at this stuff, I plan on keeping as many things in tact as possible. To save
Here's what I have:
-1 fully functional gamecube removed from the case completely
-The power and AV cables for a gamecube
-3 controllers
-a crappy handheld game system called the lexibook zeus (I may or may not harvest it's screen and speakers)
-a soldiering iron, 22 gauge wire, screwdrivers, multimeter, glue gun etc
-a few various goodies, including an extra cpu fan, from when I built a gaming comp
-time
-a small budget
-a stubborn personality

Now for what I'm planning on purchasing (PLEASE verify these parts will work, I don't want to buy the wrong parts)
For the custom regulator:
-a PTR08100WVD
-two PTH08080WAH,
-Can't find a 903 Ohm resisitor, I can find a 900 ohm on digikey though will that work? http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/e ... 72?cur=USD
-a 1.87KXBK-ND http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/e ... K-ND/13064
-a 348 ohm resister http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/e ... ND/1553962

Other parts:
-4.3 Inch LCD TFT Rearview Monitor screen for Car Backup Camera http://www.amazon.com/Rearview-Monitor- ... lcd+screen
OR
-3.5 Inch TFT LCD Monitor for Car / Automobile http://www.amazon.com/3-5-Inch-TFT-Moni ... pd_sim_e_1
-Battery BP-945 for Canon (Do I need a pcb for this?) (6000 mAh, DENAQ) http://www.amazon.com/Battery-BP-945-Ca ... B002P9BUDU
-Compact Battery Charger Set for Canon BP-945 http://www.amazon.com/Compact-Battery-C ... 45+charger

Will these parts work? If they won't or you have a different/better part in mind please send me a link or something. Also let me get this straight, the custom reg doesn't give extra battery life but instead it saves weight, space and money?

All of the parts look right on that. The custom reg allows you to use 7.4 volts instead of 12. Therefore you would be able to use your battery. As for that, you wouldn't need a protection circuit, unless you were pulling it apart and harvesting the cells inside it. (I wouldn't suggest it) Without soldering skills this would obviously be a bit difficult, but hey, if your friend is willing to help you and he's good then why not? It's pretty ambitious for a first project, but if you've got the guts to possibly kill a good GC then go for it.

Hooray! If I kill my gc I won't be too sad, it's only worth like $10-$15 so I won't be out too much. Just to be sure though I would still like a few more people to confirm this, I trust you and all but before I buy some stuff I want to be extra sure. Also thanks for answering and being nice about everything, I was afraid people would be agitated since I'm new to everything.

Everything seems good but be prepared for unexpected expenses. You will probably end up buying stuff that you wouldn't of thought of at first just for a heads up. Making a GCP as a first project is tough, but it can be done if you take your time. No soldering skills will be tough if not impossible, but if your friend is willing to help then cool. My first project is a GCP and it's going great so far. You will learn a lot and the whole experience is a challenge yet fun and educational. Good luck.

Yep no problem. If you have a Facebook and wanna talk live chat just send me a friend request. I can probably help you a lot as I have done and learned a lot so far. I also feel you learn more while actually talking then reading.

Just be sure you are logged in first before you go to the link or you will get an error. Or if you have another IM service like Google, Yahoo, AIM, etc doesn't matter to me.

I took apart my logibook zeus and here's what i have:
A 2.5 inch screen, next to a gb cartridge for size comparison (I'm gonna get a bigger one later)

and a mobo, speaker and battery hook up.

not quite sure how to hook up the speaker and screen so I'll browse the forums to see if there's anything similar.

if you do nothing else, at least START by looking at the beauty that is kasars guide. This flax helped me out so much, and it has links to other helpful info such as trimming and batteries. However, the link u have is th one on benheck, and I believe that the Modretro one is more updated: http://forums.modretro.com/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=1654

EDIT: also, if you can, get a few of each resistors, they have a percent error (usually stated on the box/site) for their resistance. Take a multimeter to your new 900 resistor, however, and you may be pleasantly surprised to find out that it is in fact 903 ohms.

Your other option for a 903 ohm pot is to use a trim pot. You can dial it into exactly 903 ohms, it's a bit bigger, but if you would rather spend more on one item that you know will do the job, then it might be helpful. (Pretty useful on all three regulators)

Ok, I rewired the power pins and connected the mobo to the reg with 4 wires, tested it with normal power supply and it works fine! Now here's what I need to know. I'm gonna run this off a 7.4v camera battery (6600 mah) so how would I go about hooking up the fan (standard Gamecube fan is 12v i think) and a 12v lcd screen: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006MP ... WY7WSU0P88 ? Do I need a new fan? And like i said before i'm going to be making a custom regulator. Thanks in advance, and thanks for the tips on the pot and guide.
