N64 Thumbstick Mods?

Has anyone here modded an N64 controller to use a thumbstick with a potentiometer? I play a lot of Mario Kart and the thumbsticks on my controllers get really loose from moving left and right to get the drift boost. I'd like to mod a 1st party controller to use a thumbstick with a potentiometer but I'm wary of any delay that microcontrollers might cause when encoding the thumbstick movement. What are your experiences with these mods like?

I've seen that thumbstick, but I'm not convinced that it will be my best option for a replacement. I'm mostly just looking for peoples reviews on replacement joysticks or experiences with potentiometer thumbstick mods.

I'll probably end up doing a potentiometer thumbstick mod when I find the time because then I can tweak the microcontroller code however I want. I've heard somewhere that these mods (pot mods) cause input delay, but I'm guessing that's somewhat BS considering a microcontroller running at 20MHz+ translating the potentiometer's input would cause a very unnoticeable delay.

Edit: I found a video that displays in-part what I'm talking about

I guess the gamecube style stick is pot-based, but as you can see, it seems to increment the y-axis in steps of two, and most likely with some lag. Perhaps it would be best to design my own controller with with the thumbstick in mind and fit it inside of a first party controller.
