Internal memory card question

i read somewhere that to make an internal memory card you had to have an official nintendo memory card, because of the battery or something.
Is that true or can i hardwire any memory card internally and be safe? because official mem cards are pricy, and i don't really see why i could use any kind of memory card

You can hard wire any memory card. I've not seen one with a battery on it yet.
