Engadget just outed an eBay seller that sells custom controller boards for around $33. From what I checked you can have VGA and DVI boards, or VGA and S-video and composite boards. Or another with an Analog TV tuner and some inputs.

Works with a lot of LCDs (check the list on the listing before you buy) but sadly my LCD screen from my busted Acer (LP141WX1) isn't supported. Sad face. :(

**EDIT: I just emailed the eBay seller and they said my LCD WAS COMPATIBLE! They will sell me the whole caboodle: the controller, board, cables, and some misc stuff. For $33! Heck YEAH!!

Wow. Make sure you tell us if it actually works or not. That's pretty cool if it does.

@Mario

Sure. I'm looking around to try and get the version I would get the most bang for my buck for.

EDIT: I like this seller. Replies so fast. Less than 15 minutes. ^^

I might go for this:

A tad more expensive than $33 (up to $50) but for that I get VGA, YPbPr, Composite, S-Video and TV Tuning. I'll let you guys know when I buy it (kinda short in cash atm.) and what happens.

Hmm, this makes me want to go back to an old project I never finished. Being able to use a screen that isnt ass would be excellent.

Didn't I try to add this to the mega sticky a while ago...?
Meh. As long as it's added, because it's a fully viable solution. The seller has loads of controllers they program, plus they've got smaller sized LCD for portables that need a cheap, 480p screen that's really thin.

I'm using one of their kits for a PS3p, but not really taking advantage of how slim the screen is. It is... well, SLIM. just 1cm or so. One thing I've encountered though- if you buy a controller with HDMI they can't give you full disclosure that it will work with your LCD.

so has anybody actually tried these? I want to see if I can use the screen from my old thinkpad, but don't want to dish out the money if it hasn't been tested by somebody reputable on here.

I was doing this in 2006. I used to test them out for a distributor. Probably tried between 25-30 of them with different Lcd's.

Works perfectly fine. It just takes 4-8 weeks to get everything from Hong Kong.

I just got 4 of these things in the mail. They work fine. They aren't perfect, but they get the job done, and get it done well.

Basically the controllers only accept certain resolutions, so it adjusts things around a bit to match the screens native resolution. Really not a big deal in most cases.

I'll write up a review and guide in a few days...

Yea you have to make sure to buy the controller that is for the screen you have. If you have a 1920x1200 screen then you need a Wuxga controller. A 1280x720 screen then you need a WXGA controller. Otherwise you will have issues.

Well, what I'm saying is that if you have a 1024*798 screen, it will give you 1024 * 800

I sent the people messages before, during, and after ordering just to make absolutely sure I was getting the right boards.

Yes but there used to be many different boards that could run many different resolutions. I don't know if they still do that though.
