Gamecube controller on n64

I found this mod on using the gamecube controller on the n64. I'm wondering if anyone has done this or knows its legit? Cause i might be interested in using this for my n64p since it looks really easy to do, I can use a 3ds slider for c buttons, and i already have the microchip used in the mod which is convenient.

Just for reference, my Digikey order to build four of these came out to $15 plus shipping. The only tricky part is finding something to program the PICs with, but I've seen ways to do that with an Arduino Uno if you've got one.
