gamecube controller button contacts

Anyone have any experience with fixing aging controller button contacts on the board? I think the graphite on mine is badly wearing down. Would conductive paint or pen work or is there some way to replace or restore the graphite? Where would I apply the paint? I tried drawing on it with a pencil which seemed to help somewhat for a while but I dont want to degrade the contacts. I've also seen some guides using foil but that seems clunky.

I read that using a hole punch and metallic tape works okay. I imagine if you can get it to set evenly some conductive glue would also work.
