Experience with GC modding?

Don't really need help with anything, but I'm just curious about other people's modding experience. On average, how many GC motherboards would you say someone making their first portable will fry before finally building it? How long does a typical first portable take?
I've been trying to build my first portable forever. Right now I'm on my 5th GC motherboard, 3rd case, 2nd screen, and 2nd regulator, and feeling like I've failed more times than anyone. (Although I can't be the only one... because you're never the only one)
Anyways just thought I'd get a general discussion going about the less fortunate side of modding..

i think the current title holder used 22 mainboards before achieving success...
...but that was back in the time before WKF for GC was discovered which made things a lot easier...
...and there are a lot more resources available now than before...

general info about modding:
research heavy before starting...ive done projects in the past where i have researched for a year before i even made a purchase to begin an attempt at modding...
you should not concern yourself with how long it takes...take your time and triple check everything before applying power (or epoxy)..working slower can sometimes be faster (and cheaper) ...

You make very good points, and thanks for the advice mega. I feel like the more times I fail, the better I get, so I'm not giving up. Even if it costs a ton and I have to constantly start over and learn from mistakes, nothing can physically stop me from finishing my portable. (Unless the world runs out of gamecubes I suppose...)

I have been trying to build my first forever as well. I've been through 4 cases, 8 sound amps, 5 screens, countless controllers and around 14 motherboards. I am finally getting very close at this moment, but I started into electronics for the first time a little over a year ago for this portable. And even in the short amount of time I've been part of these communities, like Mega said, so many more resources have been brought to everyone. It's really great, especially with what's come out of it.

Well my first one i only used one but i treted that board batter then my wife and i prayed before i solder every wire but on the seccond one it took me 8 gc mobos cuz i just didnt care enough
So all i got to say is be very carefull with your work and care for it alot

I'm on my second board. You really do need to exercise alot of caution in some things you do. But I found that if my hands are shaky that day I don't solder. Also don't rush, you may feel like Heck yeah I have a great pace going, it couod be time for a break. Grab a drink, stand up walk around, sit in your thinking chair, or 'insert relaxing phrase'. My count tho is 2 gc boards(1 working, 1 maybe) , 1 mem card, one controller, 1 case, 3 audio amps (1 untested, 1 tested working, 1 tested not working), 1 pcb, 4 batteries, 2 switches, 2 ps2 controllers for pieces, 1 gc psu modded with custom tip.

HAHA
this pretty much applies to every spontaneous decision, purchasing decision, or any other time a tough decision needs to be made...
relax yourself off...
...then rethink about the decision
