cordless microphone

A microphone works the same way it normally does when it's cordless, except it will send radio or whatever frequency waves to a receiver instead of being directly wired. Yes, microphones do need a form of amplification. And I'm not entirely sure if it would say it includes the amplifier, I would think the receiver would have some sort of amplifier in it, but things are not always as you would think.

Anywho:
If you didn't know, microphones work by a vibrating diaphragm that turns the varying sound energy into varying electrical energy. (For a wireless microphone, the varying current would be transferred into varying light waves that would be picked up elsewhere and translated back into varying electrical current.)
