Bugman's gamecube portable WIP

Well here I am starting another project. This will make me have three projects all at once! I started this on friday because I was very bored and I had a spare gc lying around, so I was like, I should make this thing into something real tiny! and I did. Now that I have a working omgwtf gamecube, I haven't decided whether I want to put it into a psp case or put it into an n64 cartridge (not a portable). I am most likely gonna put it into a psp case cause that sounds way cooler.

I can still trim a tiny bit more from that motherboard like cutting off those caps at the bottom of the board, but I've had a long weekend and I dont feel like doing that right now but once I cut that off, It'll fit nicely into a psp case.

Re: Bugman's tiny gamecube project

I cut the board a tiny bit more so that it would fit in the psp case and now it ain't working at all. I cut off the caps at the bottom of the board. I removed all of the caps exept 2 of them that were for the 12v sound relocation i think and it worked and then I cut a tiny chink off that was where I removed the caps and it doesnt turn on and the chips dont get warm either.

I rewired 1 wire to the big cap and I think it goes to ground. There was a small cap next to it that I did relocate but I took it off for no reason after I confirmed it didnt work. Anyone have any idea what is causing this board not to work? Did I trim too much off?

EDIT: I know part of the problem is that my regulator board isnt working. It is getting 12v into it fine, but it isnt outputting anything

Re: Bugman's tiny gamecube project

This looks awesome, dude :)
Glad to see you working on a GC portable too.

The gamecube is awesome,
I see a psp case, will that be your portable's case or the n64 zelda cartage?

Also, nice OMGWTF cut.

Looks good, can't wait to see more of your portable progress

I haven't decided what I was going to do with this board. I'm leaning towards a psp gc. I'm glad you like the trim... too bad it isnt working right now

Pretty good indicator that you have a short somewhere.

Re: Bugman's tiny gamecube project

I think im set on putting a gc in a psp case for this project because it sounds really awesome. I found some batteries I might be able to use so I can actually call it a portable and not a handheld. The batteries i picked out are 4250mah which should power the gc for 1-2 hours? The batteries are too long to fit next to each other but they are only about 6mm thick so I could stack them on top of each other and only add about 1 cm to the thickness. I'm estimating that this portable could be around 4cm thick which is as thick as the first fusion micro.

Anyone have a good link to where I can get a wikey fusion from buying in the us?

Nice project!

I've started a "PSP Cube Project" some time ago but never had the inspiration to finish it. I'm actually thinking on change the whole project to another case cause I don't really like the feel of the PSP controller/button positions.

Good luck with yours! This will be really nice!

I'm fine with the psp layout because I owned a 3000 for a while and it was enjoyable and playable but a psp with 2 analog sticks can be awkward at first. I know this because I put an xbox 360 controller inside of a psp case recently

nice mod, dude :)
and awesome channel,
when i saw your n64p video i saw the case and it looks alot like mine. nice youtube channel and n64p :)

also how do you use a psp analog on a gc controller? i have a yinlips analog stick im thinking of using, do you have any diagrams on how to wire up an psp analog stick?

Re: Bugman's tiny gamecube project

I used this diagram. Word of advice: You won't go anywhere if you use a psp stick. They are mediocre at best.Get a 3ds stick. They are [almost] flawless.

Re: Bugman's tiny gamecube project

New case design. Psp case isnt appealing that much to me right now but it is still an option. This is slightly bigger than the original gba because it looks less awkward with a 3.5 inch screen and the omgwtf mobo will fit more comfortably in this one.

Re: Bugman's tiny gamecube project

Just worked the case design into google sketchup. The image is stretched to fit all four pics, so be advised.

Re: Bugman's tiny gamecube project

The gba style case was too complicated for me so I restarted to something more simple. This is just your average square portable. I'm debating whether I should scrap this design too and make a portable with a 5 inch screen like the envision but the aliex screens are expensive and the ebay 5 inchers are all widescreen i think. A gc in a psp is still an option right now too. I've got so many great options for a case to choose from, but I'm not sure which one to do.

What is a good controller to use for buttons? I have a cheap 3rd party controller and I dont wanna use the cheap buttons in my portable. also, what is a good controller that can be trimmed down to something real tiny?

I decided to use the 3rd party controller I have. I traced it out so I wont forget where to wire the buttons when I trim it. I couldnt make out the traces on the bottom in my pic so I redrew the traces.

I settled on a case. I designed a case that is 8 x 14 cm.

I'm confused on this. What is the slot B/sd gecko do? I feel like I dont need it if I dont know what it is, but a lot of gc portables have them though.

The SD gecko is like the WiiKey slot, but you can write to it. The idea is you keep your GC games on the Fusion slot, which loads faster and that you store your emulators on the Gecko slot, so you can save to the same location.

basically so you can keep all of your SNES GX9 saves in one place

oh thats what it does. Well.. thats cool and all, but all i care about right now is gc games so I'm probably gonna leave that out.

I have so many case designs but I dont know how to choose the right one for me.
Should I use ds lite abxy buttons or gamecube abxy buttons?
I heard that some games the diamond setup can be awkward but I wouldnt know because I only own 1 gc game (yes I know, very sad)

Here are some of my case designs and let me know which ones you like the most please. There are more but they only very slightly like the shape. I am just having trouble deciding whether to use diamond shape or standard gc setup

Why is this guide telling me I need a reg for 5v? Dont I just need a reg for 1.9v and 3.4v? An then the 7.4v from batteries goes to the sound right? Also, why cant I use a ptho8080 for both the 1/9v and 3.4v? If I had to take a guess, I'd say it has to do with output current or something like that.
