ttsgb, I agree, BUT it is much more reliable to scan a PCB at a resolution (for example 600DPI) and be able to take the DPI to figure out measurements. The flat lighting also brings out more detail for a board.

whilst there are tools that can help with this,) and lighting is so much more important. Yes, there is the potential to get better detail with a photo, but it's not guaranteed.
When I hear someone talking about how good their camera is, without hearing them testify to their skills at all, I doubt the person has any. This might sound harsh but for someone who works in and AnimationVFX environment you are always better off to assume everyone is useless till they prove you wrong than giving them the benefit of the doubt.

The only clear benefit I can think for capturing boards this way is that you wouldn't have to desolder every component to get a board scan.
