Another GCp - The GameCube Control

Hello,

I'm new to this forum, and I wanted to create this topic because it will be my first portable console, and I have already some little problems.

Actually, its not problems, its just that I want to do it perfectly, and I don't want to destroy my GameCube :p

So I've bought all that I need, A Screen (from a portable DVD Player), a Wiikey fusion and of course a gamecube :).
I didnt bought any batteries for now, because I didn't see the need to, cause i'm trying to link screen-wiikey-gamecube and we will saw for the rest :)

So my first "problem", is that I have no information about my screen :X
And I wanted to know if someone can see what is what.

So here is my screen (Sorry for the bad quality):
<images deleted because the screen is broken>

The speakers are not here, they are apart from that, and I know what goes where :)

Oh and I wanted to add something : I'm 19, and i'm starting a school engineer. So it will be the best if i can understand what i'm doing. If you have some teacher skills, go on :)

(Sorry for my english, i'm french.
Donc si des français peuvent/veulent m'aider ça serais cool aussi :D )

Re: Another GCp Worklog

Did your dvd player have a yellow RCA jack? If it did just trace back the video from there. Also see if you can follow some voltage lines to the screen.

Re: Another GCp Worklog

In fact (I didnt thought it will be that messed up) I only bought the screen (it was CHEAP as *Can'tSayThisOnTV*)

So no, I can't trace any sources :X

How can I test each pins ?

I tried first to turn on the screen, but with no success... that's a good start :(
I don't know if the pins are wrong or my method is wrong.
I just linked the 12v pins of the gc mobo to the two red lines, and nothing shows up. Is this method good ?

Re: Another GCp Worklog

I would say try one red and one black. With black being - and red being +. You still might not be able to use this screen because you might need the whole dvd player mobo.

Re: Another GCp Worklog

Ok, my screen is working :D

But I've no image.

I linked the composite output into the green but that doesn't work.
My father said it looked like a RGB input, do you agree ?

Re: Another GCp Worklog

There's a good chance its composite, you just have to figure out which wire. We can't really help because we have very limited info.

Your pictures look like they were taken with a potato. There are a couple things you can do to try to make them look a little less sucky in the future, even using the same camera. It looks like you either zoomed in with digital zoom or held the camera 2 inches from object. Try holding the camera a little farther away so it can actually focus. Leave it zoomed out, at the very least it will make the picture look a little sharper, and showing more of the screen might help someone help you. However, using even a cheap/old digital camera with optical zoom and macro mode will still look worlds better.

Re: Another GCp Worklog

Yea sorry for the bad quality, I took them with my iPod :x

I will try to take other photo with better camera when I will get home ;)

If you need specifics informations just ask :p
I will try to get as much as info as possible in my future pics ;)

EDIT : Here is the better pic : /!\ very large

EDIT 2: Okay, so now don't consider my screen anymoe :X
I just short-circuited it :X

I've bought a TV screen this time, hope it will be better :)

Re: Another GCp Worklog

Little Update :

I've finished soldering all the wires of the gamcube mobo (to the wiikey)

wiikey.png

I've been using this diagram :

DDConnectorWiikey-WODEPinsMedCutMBTop.jpg

I've two questions about the diagram :
One question is only to be sure : Can I safely solder just one wire to all the gnd pads (linked together) ?
And same question about the 5v holes.

Re: Another GCp Worklog

5v will kill your Wiikey. You need 3.3v to power it.

Re: Another GCp Worklog

Yea ok

So I need only one wire in one hole and that's all I guess, so there will be empty holes at the end, no problems with that ? (just to be sure)

Re: Another GCp Worklog

Yea, you may want to double up the wires for ground. But one connection is fine. Ground is ground is ground on the GC its all linked together.

Re: Another GCp Worklog

Ok thanks ;)

Now I'll just wait my screen to arrive and I'll have a screen.

I've another question, about linking the Wiikey to the mobo.
You said in your post that there is 2 methods :
The first one is to buy a special adapter to have an easier soldering.
I'm french, and I can't find any of these in my country, cause I don't even know what's the translation in french...
Have you some "international name" about these connectors ? I found some "FFC adapter" but it doesnt fit with the wiikey cable.
So if these adapters doesn't exists in france, I'll go for the 2nd method.

Re: Another GCp Worklog

Yes but I've some problems with ordering it...

I tried again and I tell you.
EDIT: So ok I've successfully ordered my adapter :O
Don't know why I had some problems last time.

Just knowing this discussion here exists is super cool. So is it possible yet to play Gamecube games on something mobile? Huh? Huh?
I don't even...... Okay look, go to the gamecube mega sticky and scroll down to finished projects then look around.

Re: Another GCp Worklog

I've some questions,

How about the WiiKey SD ? We have all about the electronic thing, but no tutorials about the wiikey sd ?
I've one site where they say how to install for the wii but not for the gamecube :/
What are the file extensions for gamecube games ? Cause I've only .gcm files.
And how do we install the linux system and all that stuff ?

One more question is about the case, what is the easiest and cheapest method to create a case ?
I saw Vacuum Forming but is there any other good method ?

Re: Another GCp Worklog

Update !

I received my screen and tada ! :D

I have image ! ::3: (but not sound for now)
I'm pretty happy since I didn't made any electronics things before, and It was magical to see the screen appear after 30 minutes of random testing the differents holes :D
But now, I want to turn on my screen with my gamecube... and I didn't figured how... my screen requiered 9V according to its properties, but its normally working with 12V according to Internet.
I tested some holes, and nothing were working... so now I need some help with that ::3:

Here is some pics of the screen :

EDIT : Yeay... my screen died... again, but this time, I don't even know why...

Re: Another GCp Worklog

Update !

I just received my FFC36 (that arrived in 3 days from states, ok, world record :D)
And I linked all the wiikey together and all that stuff and...

Tada ! It works !

(no pics of working wiikey for now, wait tomorrow)

Here is my mess :

Now I must find a gamecube game to see if its really working :)
Any idea on where to find this ?

Re: Another GCp Worklog

Awesome!!!
Looks nice. Clear pics and very good work in soldering.

Try emuparadise..... ;)

This FFC turns into easy soldering the mindjap wiring to wiikey :awesome:

Waiting for your progress...
I started my own project and for now, my work is for the case.
Sooner or later, my wiikey and my new solder machine come's and start real fire :)

Good Luck and don't forget to post your pics!
