It's possible to change an engine out with a pair of pliers. But having the proper tools makes it better/easier/smarter. The best at anything have the best tools. :)

Why does it look like the bottom - gray wire is touching the 3.3v gray wire AND the negative side of the capacitor?

If there is a spark and the cap blows it is wired backwards. Period. Either the cap is wired backwards or the entire Pth is wired backwards. One way or another you have positive going into the cap where the negative should be.

They are huge. 3 times longer and almost twice as thick as the batteryspace ones. That's why people use the 4700mAh , they are very small.
