How to get headphone to work with audio amp?

Hello, I already have an audio amp, that I bought. It has everything I need with a potentiometer and everything. My question is how can I hook a headphone jack up to it so when the headphone is inserted, the amp turns off, and the same potentiometer controls the headphones?

if the headphone jack is 1/8, then rip one out of a spare appliance, and it should have a switch that turns on the headphones and turns off the amp. if the headphone jack is larger, I have no clue. but the headphone jack would definitely be between the volume potentionometer and the audio imput for sure.
