Getting 12v DC from a NES?

Hopefully someone in the know can help.

I basically need to get 12v DC from my NES for a little project I'm working on. Now I know the NES converts AC to DC in the NES and outputs this to 5v DC through the 7805 but should I step up the 5v output to the 12v DC I require or should I seek an alternative voltage source before the 7805 and then step up or step down from that?

Next question, what should I use to step up the voltage from 5v?

Barring a lower than 12V voltage before it goes into the 7805, I'd say get it before.

Otherwise, a good boost regulator would be here.
