Converting VHS to digital

I got an oldish videocamera from a friend for free today, but it only records VHS. I want to be able to put footage from it on my computer without having to use a converter box. Is there some sort of thing I can get that I can wire up inside of an empty VHS shell that will convert the signals from the videocamera real-time and write them to files on an SD card? There is RCA output, so maybe I can do something with that?

My dad wanted to do the same thing. The only thing he found that would work was a converter box. I don't think his was expensive at all.

I've really been hoping for something that doesn't require a computer, but I could also get a USB capture card off eBay and just capture the video in Vegas.
