I thought it was about time I started showing some of my work on my current project, so here is a view of my partially prepared board, and the AV standardize mod that i posted about a few months ago, only this is an example of what you can do with it

my HDMI converter, adapted to the standardize mod:

the board side mod:

and the end result:

the device seems to work just fine from the supplied 5 volts in the AV port, however you can use the mini USB to power it, if for whatever reason it isn't enough

the next step is to encase all the little wires in JB weld, then I will call it complete, afterword I'll show it working with my screen

Re: My take on PS2 portable, development and progress thread

Cant wait to see more

Re: My take on PS2 portable, development and progress thread

so here we go, my admittedly small update to the video out portion of the portable, and a few of the things to come

here's how it looks on my HDMI screen:

and of course my converter, insulated and strengthened with JB weld:

I also wanna show the alt points I'm using for the disc lid, and reset:
IMG_20150319_233939_zpsieva2mqs.jpg

the kynar wire can actually be fit through the larger vias in the board
IMG_20150319_233954_zps1m4vo2ix.jpg

as you can see I've also adapted my standardize mod to the Ethernet port, since I'll be using a Raspberry Pi. and a question about that; I made sure to keep the Ethernet port itself intact while I removed it, but all it really is is a bunch of filters, so the question is, will I actually need it?

the next thing I'm gonna do is put a modchip in my system, I'll probably be using my red kynar wire, but I'm debating using red and black as I did with my converter, anyone care to venture an opinion?

Re: My take on PS2 portable, development and progress thread

and here it is, a modchip install done using several of the alt points that I've found during my research: RST, CX, SX, Y, and GND

I'll let the pictures speak for themselves

I still haven't been able to tell if my new SX point works, (I think my system has a bit of a bugbear with CDs), it wont even load an official PSone game, so who can say, maybe the laser POT need a little tweak..

**EDIT** the new SX point does not work, I'll rework the wires a bit and post an update later

this is the best cleanest install I've ever seen good job man.

thank you!! I spent hours looking at pics of the best installs that Google could find lol, they were my inspiration

Re: My take on PS2 portable, development and progress thread

Yeah, this is incredible and super clean. Keep up the great work, the PS2 needs some more love around here.

Re: My take on PS2 portable, development and progress thread

ugh, this project has to go on the back burner for a while, I cocked up the USB relocation and made the whole board ostensibly useless. looks like I'll be taking another crack at that modchip install lol

Re: My take on PS2 portable, development and progress thread

The Project is back on!!

I was fortunate enough to find a spectacular deal on two nearly identical 79001 consoles!!!

nothing quite like having *Can'tSayThisOnTV* up insurance XD

Re: My take on PS2 portable, development and progress thread

OKAY!!!
update time:

first off, I'm using the top section of the original case for the disc drive, so here is my attempt at relocating the connections of the disc drive, just the track motor for now:

_20151019_172150_zpsrosmlx4d.jpg

_20151019_172207_zpsfjeeeawp.jpg

as can be seen, I've used JB weld to attach the headers and pins, now I just have to think of a way to transfer it off board

and second, I managed to extend my AV standardize mod to include the power and GND

_20151019_173500_zpslmraneeo.jpg

_20151019_173524_zpsdljfegly.jpg

as you can see in the last picture (sort of), the power and GND points are surface mounted, as opposed to the AV points which are through hole

Re: My take on PS2 portable, development and progress thread

does the PS2 have any SD or USB loading solutions? I can't imagine that disc drive is power efficent

Re: My take on PS2 portable, development and progress thread

Some interfaces speed:
USB 1.1: ~1MB/s
HDpro: 1.2-1.6MB/s
SMB: 1MB/s - 3MB/s (depends on how much ram eaten by game)
CD: 1.5MB/s - 3.6MB/s
DVD: 2MB/s - 5MB/s
i.Link: 7MB/s (only presented on fat consoles SCPH-1xxxx and SCPH-3xxxx)
HDD: 10MB/s (only presented on fat consoles SCPH-1xxxx, SCPH-3xxxx and SCPH-5xxxx and slim consoles SCPH-70xxx)

All except ilink are supported by opl. i.Link is supported in ps2esdl.

Re: My take on PS2 portable, development and progress thread

Time again for an UPDATE!!

more news on the disc drive, I have been working on moving the contacts for the motorized parts of the disc drive under the board:

15d9e8a4-06a9-4440-b625-7f3afe36c92d_zpsoxux9mfq.jpg

as you can see, I've trimmed the board down beyond that most would recommend, but thanks to my board sanding research, I discovered how to retain USB function; just a little green wire ;)

_20151029_134709_zpsbyqtjmqg.jpg

this, is a chunk of IDE cable head, modified with outfacing contacts (will post tutorial if people are interested), bottom coated in JB Weld over a disposable gift card (thier plastic is so slick that the epoxy will not stick, but leaves a perfectly flat and smooth surface once fully cured), and then JB Welded to the board
_20151029_135139_zpsjnurlcqk.jpg

and now to show you how I attach the spindle motor cable:

with the assistance of a friend who has very steady hands, I employed a small torch on the opposite side of a dead board to desolder a spindle motor port
_20151029_140041_zpsbdi9daxl.jpg

_20151029_140007_zpsievima6r.jpg

well that's it for now, these updates would likely come more frequently if not for how bloody long it takes for JB Weld to harden, I would use something else, if anything else was even nearly as effective.

Re: My take on PS2 portable, development and progress thread

Just a small one today, I finally have all the ports standardized with breakaway headers:

_20151110_162048_zpsobrwqg4g.jpg

_20151110_162031_zps2s8fvxwx.jpg

and I have my fan mounts in place:

they may be a little hard to notice on account of them being the same color as the capacitors
_20151111_193345_zpsm1llscfp.jpg

and of course the fan in place
_20151111_193328_zpsk1vhp1gt.jpg

I'm still hunting for a heatsink, I need one that's 45x45x6mm, and then I need to have it machined to take about a millimeter off the bottom, so that'll be fun :wtf:

anyway that's it for now, next time I hope to have the HDMI converter installed (different than before), as well as all the header pins that mate with the ports, stay tuned!!

I am abandoning this build, I have devised a far superior design, and will start a new worklog once enough parts arrive
