Do you have any photos of those battery enclosures? I wouldn't mind having one or two. I wanted to implement some battery door-type fixtures but can't find any cheap nor do I wanna rip them out of anything I have.

You are correct. The shielding copper wire is a ground, and the internal, insulated one carries the signal. I recently learned this myself trying to hook up composite video to a wii screen.
