Varying power source for LED mod?

I was poking around, and I read that the "Command" pin on a PS1 controller sends a signal of 3.3V. If I were to tie an LED into that pin, would it dim and light up as data goes through the pin? Or would it be an "always on" kind of deal? Additionally, what kind of effect would this have on the controls?

In short, I want to add an LED into a PS1 (phat) that will dim and light up. I've seen it done through audio lines, I was just wondering if it was at all possible to do it on the controller line.

The data bits going through may cause a ghetto PWM-type effect, varying the brightness. It might work, but it would be pretty random. As for messing up the controls, it might or might not. If you switch it through a transistor or optoisolator it probably won't.

It's the random effect I'm looking for.

Hmmm. If it would require an opto, it's just as much work as using the audio lines. Guess I'll be doing some playing around and seeing what effect I like better.
