Actually, if you do a bit of digging you'll find that once Yinlips release the 4.0 ICS the analog stick can be separated from the d-pad (its only mapped to the d-pad through software, not hardware). Gingerbread apparently doesn't support the use of true analogs, though ICS does.

I have the new firmware from Yinlips installed with ICS 4.0 and unfortunately still can't figure how to get true analog outa this thing.

Hope someone figures it out.

Yea, the ICS firmware Yinlips released is kind of buggy/unfinished. I went back to gingerbread for now. There is a guy over on the Dingoonity forums who's working on a bunch of fixes through a custom rom he's building. Looks pretty promising.
