Easiest portable console?

I'm very interested in building a portable console of any kind, SNES, PS2, etc. and I was wondering, what would be the easiest portable console for a beginner to build? I have minimal experience with working on things like motherboards and other internal parts

Probably NES or an NES clone. One voltage to deal with, simple controls, etc. For a bit more challenge, the N64 is heavily documented and often was used as a first project.
